Becoming Bidfood

Bidfood’s New Zealand story begins in Rotorua back in 1983 with the Crean family foodservice business started by Bob Crean to supply local restaurants with local and imported fresh and frozen seafood.

Expansion followed into Hamilton then Auckland, and by the early 1990’s “Crean’s” was the leading specialist foodservice supplier in the country, and certainly the most innovative.

On 1st April 2000, Crean Foodservice was acquired by Bidvest, the second international acquisition of what would go on to become the global Bidcorp group.

The acquisition of Rotorua Juice and Wellington based Seafood Specialities later in 2000 firmly set the business on a path to growth in New Zealand. By 2005 the national footprint of the business was established, including our first fruit & vegetable wholesale operation, also in Rotorua.

In 2008 the business trading name was changed to Bidvest; reflecting the development of the group internationally and the New Zealand business as a key part of this.  Acquisitions continued as the regional network of foodservice and fresh product operations were consolidated around the country.

Bidvest’s entry into processing and light manufacturing operations started with the 2011 acquisition of Raeward Fresh in Christchurch, since expanded through acquisition and greenfields investment to 4 specialist processing operations in Auckland and Christchurch.

By 2016 Bidvest’s international foodservice operations had grown into a global operation across 5 continents, and on May 30 was officially formed into a separate listed company Bid Corporation Limited.  Bidvest New Zealand became Bidfood.

Now Bidfood is a market leading foodservice provider, offering customers a wide range of products from fresh food, to liquor, and non food consumables.
